I can't believe Oakland Raiders head coach, Hue Jackson, let me photograph him getting his pre-game manicure/pedicure. It ran as a 2-page spread in the current issue (Dec 26) of ESPN the Magazine.

Some of the photos from my "Sports and Gangs" story were featured on today's CBS Morning Show and last night's CBS Evening News. The photos also appear in this week's Sports Illustrated, below. They feature a remarkable young man named Kitam Hamm who lives in the midst of LA's gang warfare and yet he has avoided gang life, has a 3.8 grade point average and has been recruited by Harvard, Stanford and Yale. Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends

It is a huge honor, and humbling, to be included in Tim Mantoani's book, Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends. Tim photographed over 150 photographers holding a print of one of their most iconic images including Neil Leifer's image of Muhammad Ali standing over a knocked-out Sonny Liston, Harry Benson's photo of The Beatles having a pillow fight and Steve McCurry's famous portrait of the Afghan girl with the green eyes from the cover of National Geographic. Each photographer was photographed with a 20x24 Polaroid camera. This started as a personal project and grew into this book with the help of Kickstarter crowd-sourcing to print the book. Brad Mangin wrote a great blogpost about the project.

I had an opportunity to photograph a remarkable young boy in Texas whose robot goes to school for him. Kidney disease has compromised his immune system so drastically that he can't be around other kids. Sports Illustrated ran the story in the August 1st issue.

I had an assignment to photograph Annika Sorenstam as she retires from being the world's top woman golfer to her new life as a business woman, wife, and mother. Here is the opener for the spread that ran in Sports Illustrated magazine's current Golf issue. I was very happy with my editor's choice for the opening photo, an unexpected moment between Annika and her husband, Mike.

Before Spring Training in February, Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, 2 time Cy Young winner, agreed that I could do a season-long behind-the-scenes photo story on him for Sports Illustrated. Just back from Paris, one of my favorite cities. I saw a great exhibit of 100 prints by Alexandra and Pierre Boulat at Petit Palais. Highly recommended for anyone traveling through Paris. Below is a picture I shot of people relaxing juxtaposed with the water fountains at Tullerie Gardens.

Pine Ridge Reservation

I'm just recently back from a second trip to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota where I'm shooting for a documentary film on the Lakota people. I'm shooting stills and video with the Canon 5D MKII and recording ambient audio and interviews with the Olympus LS-11.

Chief Big Foot's great-great grandson

I had the opportunity to photograph Chief Big Foot's great-great grandson, Leonard Little Finger, at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota recently. Leonard has founded Sacred Hoop School, a Lakota language immersion school for children in the community to stay connected to their roots. He is a spiritual man with a heart of gold.

Tiger Then and Now

I photographed Tiger Woods as he won the US Open at Pebble Beach in 2000 when he was making his mark on the golf world. Since then, I witnessed Tiger at the top of his game. It was a different Tiger I saw this year, ten years later, struggling with his game as I photographed him once again at Pebble Beach at the US Open. In the first picture he is celebrating a great shot in 2000 on the 15th fairway which set up an eagle. In the second shot, this year, he reacts as he misses a birdie putt on the 14th green.

Kangaroos in the Backyard

Just catching up here. I woke up to the sight of a kangaroo with a "joey" in her pocket in the backyard of our friends' house near Surfer's Paradise. We were there for the Australian launch of our camera bag company, Think Tank Photo.

Best of Photojournalism competition. I used my Canon 5DMKII
HDDSLR to shoot the stills and video as did Doug Grant. The piece
was edited by Stan Alcorn, produced by Eric Maierson and the Executive Producer was Brian Storm at Media Storm.

Sports Illustrated Photo Shoot

In the current issue of Sports Illustrated (Mar 22, 2010) I have a photograph that illustrates a good point. When I finish a portrait shoot, I usually ask the subject if there is anything else they'd like to do as well as when I finish an audio interview I ask the subject if there is anything else they want to say. More times than not, something good comes of it.

My assignment was to go to Utah and make a portrait of Arnie Ferrin, 84, and Wat Misaka, 80. They are two original University of Utah players from the 1944 team that won the NCAA championship, a team known as the unlikeliest champions, a true Cinderella team.
As the early evening light was fading I had shot about every configuration I could come up with so I asked them if they had anything they wanted to do. Arnie, without missing a beat said in jest, Wat has always needed a little help so let's give him a ladder.
Turned out to be my favorite picture of the day and it is also the one my editors at SI chose to publish.

My Day Playing in a Funeral Marching Band

          The other day I went out to work on a personal project photographing the Green Street Mortuary Marching Band. I had previously photographed them and am intrigued by their unique offering, marching in front of the funeral processions for “Important” clients.
            As the band organized and lined up; horns at the front, percussion at the back, Lisa Pollard, the band leader discovered that one of the 10 musicians didn't show up – one from the back.  The family of the deceased paid for 10 band members, not nine.
            She looked around and focused on me, minding my own business, camera at the ready.
            "Deanne", she says, "can you do me a big favor? You're dressed in black; I need you to fill in as a band member. It won’t be hard. "
            Why not?   I can photograph the next procession this afternoon and this may give me a different perspective.
            I agreed, focusing on the “easy” part of the assignment. She slapped an oversized band hat on me and thrust the instrument into my hands.

Traffic was stopped in all directions and off we went.  

My fellow band members gave me some "on the job" training as we marched through North Beach and Chinatown with my new instrument, the gong. I had previous music lessons, but no gong lessons.

            Tim on my right, played the bass drum, he gave me the vague advise to just bang the gong when I “felt like it.”
            “Well, at least bang on the beat.” He amended.
            Vince, at my left, played the snare drum and worked with me on the marching, chanting, left, right, left and right. Then he continued with more precise directions, “Okay bang that gong now, on the beat.”
            Bonggg.
            “Louder!”
            BONGGG. 

It was so ludicrous and I was so amused that I spent half the march bonging and smiling until I remembered that this is a solemn event.  

As we marched through Chinatown, people on the crowded sidewalks stopped in their tracks to watch the band and then the hearse and cars filled with family members following closely behind. A seafood delivery man stopped unloading live Dungeness crab to watch the procession and listen as the band played Amazing Grace.

         Vinnie would continue to cue me when I was supposed to bang the gong telling me whether to "whack it" or "kiss it".   I was getting good at this!
            As we round into the depths of Chinatown the procession stops, and family members gather around the open door to the hearse.
            “Now, time for your solo.” Vinnie said.
            I froze. Solo? No one mentioned a solo in the contract.   I'm sure I looked horrified.
            “Just bang the gong each time the family bows.” He whispered.
            “Okay.” I stepped up. They bowed. I gonged. I think it went pretty well as far as solos with gongs go.
            The family came up to me at the end and gave me a tip, a crisp dollar bill in a lucky red envelope.
            So I guess if this photography thing doesn't work out, I have a plan B.
